About the Club » Committee

A small elected committee manages the club on behalf of the membership.  Elections occur at the Annual General Meeting (A.G.M), which usually occurs in November.  We are always keen to hear from members who are willing to take up positions on the committee, or even to simply organise a specific event.  No specific qualifications are required to be on the committee; just enthusiasm and a willingness to help.

I was introduced to the hills at an early age and have always loved wandering the Scottish Hills. I joined the MMC over fifteen years ago when I moved to Elgin and have been a member ever since. With fellow MMC members I have walked, scrambled, rock climbed, ice climbed, skied, cycled and kayaked all over Scotland. I have been on a few overseas mountain climbing trips, mostly with MMC members, to the Alps, the Dolomites, Spain, Norway, Bolivia, Wales, Iceland, and most recently, an MMC trip to the Italian Alps where we climbed a few 4000m peaks.

After moving to Moray in 2018, one of the first things my wife and I did was to look for a walking club. We were lucky enough to find the MMC and, despite our first outing being immediately before the pandemic, we have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know plenty of like-minded folk. Yes, I count how many Munros we climb but that doesn’t define what I look for in a hill – the views of and from a hill and looking out for wildlife of any sort are equally part of what I enjoy. That said, I must admit to becoming rather grumpy as soon as I have to put on the dreaded waterproofs!!

Although I subjected my parents to relentless whining as a child when being made to walk up Ben Rinnes (which I still get reminded about to this day), I joined the MMC when I moved back home to Moray in 2017. Through the MMC I’ve made great friends, had some brilliant adventures and countless memorable hill days. I love weekend meets and going with the flow for what the next day's plan will be. It’s hard to name a favourite day in the hills but Tower Ridge on Ben Nevis may be it, and my favourite meet location is the Loch Ossian Youth Hostel. I have two small children and am now the one who resorts to sweetie bribes to get them up hills!

My introduction to the great outdoors as a teenager, was when I did a bit of walking in the Arrochar Alps and Glencoe with my dad. From then, I spent my earlier days walking and climbing throughout the mountains in the Southern Highlands. Recently, having reallocated to Sutherland, I joined the Moray MC. Still being a relative newbie to the club, I am extremely grateful of the warm welcome and the camaraderie that I have received from everyone in the club, and it is wonderful to see that is being extended to every new member. Currently, I am self-confessed Corbett Bagger and still enjoy travelling throughout Scotland to wander up hills. I also enjoy backpacking to the remote areas of Scotland and visiting bothies. More important, my favourite tipple is malt whisky.

I‘ve always enjoyed outdoor activities, but only got properly introduced to the joys of hillwalking, climbing and mountaineering after I moved to Scotland in 2021. I joined the MMC to connect with new people and it also was a wonderful way to get into everything the Scottish hills have to offer. Everything started with a few Munros, which quickly went out of hand when I noticed how much fun it is to do big rounds and even started (very slow) trail running. In 2022 I got introduced to rock climbing and a couple of years later purchased a pair of ice axes to even dive into the depths of Scottish winter climbing. I made the best friends along the way and even climbed my first 4000 metre peaks in the Alps with fellow MMC members. To be continued…

Keen outdoor enthusiast with a self diagnosed addiction to mountains and adrenaline. My happy place is on a mountain multi pitch, but I'm not fussy hiking up mountains when conditions won't allow for climbing or seeking interesting ways up via scrambles. I don't go in for peak bagging but any kind of climbing will do from trad, sport, bouldering or when conditions allow Scottish mixed climbing. I joined the club to find other climbers/hikers and I've made some wonderful friendships learning lots along the way.

My earliest walking memories are as a small child with my Dad, by the River Humber, in an area notably lacking in hills or mountains. Fast forward a little and as a teenager then living by the Yorkshire Coast I'd be walking our dog on the chalk cliffs of Flamborough Head above the North Sea. During the same period my first Munro was Ben Nevis on a clear warm summer's day with my eldest brother. Many more hills later I moved with my family from Skye to Moray and joined the MMC where a warm welcome was received. From short trips on wee hills, to longer overnight trips camping out, there is something in the mountains and wild places that draws us, and in the words of John Muir, we must go.

My first outing with the MMC was in November 1988, when I moved to Inverness. In those days I attended as many monthly Sunday bus meets as I could, and when the kids were a bit older I started going regularly to the monthly weekend meets too. It was a great way of meeting like minded people of all ages who share my sense of adventure and love of the hills. In 2010 I compleated all the Munros (yes, it took me a long time !)… and then went on to compleat all the Corbetts.

Over the years I’ve been on club trips to the Lake District, Wales and Ireland and have climbed peaks in mountain ranges across Europe. I’ve also been on expeditions to climb Kilimanjaro, to the Himalayas, to other parts of Asia, and South America.

Currently I’m climbing the Grahams and Donalds (but not counting),getting out on my bike, still playing my fiddle ( badly🤣), doing a bit of running/jogging, am learning tai chi and have just taken up weightlifting.
