Weekend Meet Report – Cairndow, April 2023

A fine weekend was had as always with the Moray Mountaineering Club at the Cairndow Village Hall. What a cracking location to explore, a place where the club haven’t been for years! However it had been noted by a few members on this meet that more and more meets were taking place closer to the central belt. This certainly is just a coincidence, nothing to do with a certain weekends meet organiser living just one hour away from this venue. Given the distance for some members, Alan and Fiona decided to head down early on Thursday to climb one of the new ‘Grahams’ – Cruach Neuran. Nothing positive was said…

Bus Meet – Sunday, 16th April, Luiblea, Loch Laggan

The first Bus meet of 2023 will be on the 16th April 2023. It was agreed at the AGM to re-introduce Bus meets into the club calendar. A commitment to have at least 4 meets plus a Christmas Bus Meet has been taken on by the committee members who will all take a turn. The initial plan of routes is on the website and you will see that we are trying to ensure that more traverses are possible and where we can a climbing location is available for those who like that sort of thing. 2023 Awards Nominations for President’s Award and Golden Boot

New for 2023, we have introduced the ability to enter a nomination for the President’s Award and Golden Boot all year round. The winners will be announced at the AGM and awards presented at the Christmas Meet. You are welcome to nominate as many times as you wish up until the closing date (date TBC). Every year, the Club presents awards and recognises the achievements of our members. As mountaineers, we know that reaching the summit of a peak is not the only measure of success. We also recognize the importance of community, safety, and stewardship in our sport. That is why we have created this awards section to recognise…

Book Club. The Ascent Of Rum Doodle, W. E. Bowman

The Ascent of Rum Doodle is a satirical novel by W. E. Bowman, first published in 1956. The book is a parody of the classic mountaineering literature of the early 20th century, particularly the works of W. H. Murray and Eric Shipton. The story follows the exploits of the fictitious mountaineer, Binder, as he leads a team of amateur climbers on an expedition to climb the mythical mountain, Rum Doodle. The team encounters a series of hilarious mishaps and obstacles on their journey, including getting lost, battling altitude sickness, and dealing with eccentric team members. The book is known for its comedic and absurd style, and has become a cult…

Crianlarich Weekend Meet Report, February 2023

Another month another wet and windy meet hosted by Travel with Treagus! Hardy mountaineers decided to embrace the thoroughly miserable forecast and decended on Inverardran Hut in Crianlarich. On the Friday, Justin and Eric managed to get out and climb Beinn Dearg in Glen Lyon. A very wise plan getting out on the Friday, as the weather was much better than forecast, a rather overcast and mild day. On the Saturday, Fiona, Eric and Damian decided given the poor weather, an excellent choice of day out would be to walk to the Drovers in and back for lunch. They had a wonderful day, and didn’t get too soaked either! Babs was…
