Weekend Meet, Ballater, Hogmanay 2023

Ballater was the venue for the 2022/3 Hogmanay festivities and it certainly delivered. Not everyone could arrive on the Friday, due to other commitments, but those that could were able to make the most of the day. Evelyne decided to enjoy the 7 Bridges of Ballater walk. A lovely walk through woods, fields, the old railway line and along the River Dee. Little did she know that she would be repeating this two days later in very different weather!  Blue sky on Hogmanay enticed many out onto the hills, with Brent, Dianne, Dottie and Justin having a great day on Morrone from Braemar. The path was icy to 650m, and…

Weekend Meet, Elphin.  1st and 2nd October 2022

It’s been a while since the MMC visited the Grampian Speleological Group’s hut in Elphin.  It’s a well-equipped venue that offers a fine view over Cul Mor and Suilven from the conservatory, a proper fire for when it gets dark and cold, and a good drying room.  The weather on Saturday was not ideal, but nonetheless plans were made and the parties scattered. Fiona and Bob completed a traverse from Lochinver to Elphin.  Bob’s account reads “We got a lift round to Lochinver from Evelyne and after a visit to the pie shop we set off to walk to Elphin.  The first 3km was along a tarred road to Glencanisp…

Book Club. Call-Out, Hamish MacInnes, 23rd November

Please join us for an informal and relaxed book club. “A famous climber’s adventures and experiences in mountain rescue.”When? Wednesday, 23rd November, 2022Where? Via Zoom, link to be sent out. Call-Out is the definitive collection of tales about early mountain rescue in the Highlands of Scotland from Hamish MacInnes – Everest pioneer and arguably the most famous Scottish mountaineer of the twentieth century. In the late 1960s, MacInnes led the Glencoe Mountain Rescue team and together they developed innovative techniques and equipment in order to save lives – often risking their own in the process – whether night or day, and always at a moment’s notice. He was a central figure in the rescue during the 1963 New Year…

Car Meet, Sun 16th October, Corgarff Castle

An excellent central location in the Eastern Cairngorms not far from the Lecht Ski Centre. This is an ideal meeting place to meet for some fun and frolics in the wild and beautiful but more remote parts of the Cairngorms. There are two Corbetts that can be gained just by walking from here, Brown Cow Hill and Carn Ealasaid. There are numerous other less trodden slopes and tops that can also be easily reached. From here or from close by there are a number of paths and tracks that could be used for a bit of easy, intermediate or strenuous mountain biking adventures. Or why not combine a bike ride…

Glenbrittle Weekend Meet, September 2022

The yearly Glenbrittle meet in Skye did not disappoint. Despite the promise of high winds, intrepid mountaineers managed to mountaineer! Both old and new members all had a fantastic time with highs on the Cuillin ridge (Jule and Lauren saying it was their best day on the hills, ever!), serenity being found at Coire Lagan and people ready to burst after eating enough food to feed a moderate sized army. Adventures were had on the Friday for some lucky part timers. Unfortunately, none of these adventures were immortalised in the Big Red Book. Having said this, Babs was spotted near Applecross Corbett bagging on Beinn Bhan. Jule was seen half…
