The year AD2014 arrived in Plockton with … well, it would appear not much … until a couple of minutes later when some slightly dodgy looking pyrotechnics sparked up the bonfire on the wee island by the village. Plockton bonfire sparked up by dodgy looking pyrotechnics Don’t worry folks, the MMC pyrotechnic (pyromaniac?) duo responsible for famous shows such as St Andrews Day, Inverey 2013 and Guy Fawkes Night, Inchnadamph 2012 had nothing to do with this show so the assembled crowd had a slightly greater chance of survival. Ray and Heavy at Plockton Harbour, awaiting the fireworks Celebrating the New Year The firework display that followed was a truly…

January 2014 Bus Meet Report: Cairngorm
Please note the definite theme here of cakes, cafés and butties…..!! JohnH Hoped to repeat the 1959 walk of former member Keith Work, and walk to the Cairngorm summit from Aviemore! Unfortunately getting soaked on the first part of the walk to the Cairngorm Car Park (3hrs) prevented the completion of the attempt. Will try again in better weather. BillL As above but in reverse – not that I walked backwards – that would be too risky – no, from car park to fleshpots of Aviemore. Had hours to kill so God Bless Charity Shops. Walked round Loch Morlich – my only achievement!! JoeG Plan 1 was ski-ing but terrible…

December 2013 Weekend Meet Report: Inverey
With the proximity of the Northern Cairngorms to Moray and the ski road to whisk the walker and climber to a high starting altitude it can be tempting to return time and again to the northern approaches of this magnificent high plateau. However, it is always worth the long drive round to the southern side to experience a different perspective, especially if there is quality accommodation on offer for the weekend. The Moray Mountaineering Club successfully filled the Cairngorm Club’s hut, Muir Cottage, at Inverey. A fine hut it is, recently extended and luxurious and well placed for access to the Cairngorms and also to hills to the south of…

December 2013 Bus Meet Report: Glen Affric
On Sunday 15th December, thirty-three Club members attended the Bus Meet to Glen Affric. Prior to heading to Glen Affric there was some discussion on the bus about potentially changing the meet destination, as the MWIS North-West Highlands forecast was suggesting gusts to 120mph i.e. hurricane force ! We agreed to stick with Glen Affric as planned; a good decision as the wind appeared to be weaker than forecast (at least it was at lower levels). On arrival at the Dog Falls car park, thirty of the thirty-three aboard disembarked to undertake a variety of low-level walks. George and Don were next to leave the bus to undertake an ascent…
