August 2013 Weekend Meet Report: Applecross
The weather, summer holidays and some bloke suffering from motion sickness took its toll on the turnout, but nonetheless five “mountaineers” pitched camp at Applecross. Being leaderless, and not knowing who else was supposed to be around, we staked out all corners of the campsite. Saturday dawned wet and windy. Jim found somewhere out of the rain and finished his newspapers. Mark walked to Toscaig to go fishing. In keeping with the great fishing tradition of the Moray Mountaineering Club, Mark returned full of stories (like the otter that got away), but otherwise empty handed – if only you could live on stories. AndyB, Illona and Dan delayed setting off for…

August 2013 Bus Meet Report: Cairngorm Traverse
Dan and Joe – after much indecision, we found ourselves at Derry Lodge taking the right fork. The first summit (Beinn Bhreac) was soon reached. We made full use of the shelter provided by the cairn, whilst others were forced to face the wind. A pleasant walk across some bog took us to Beinn a Chaorainn. Then on to Fords of Avon where there was a nice new howff. The slopes of Cairngorm were a slog, but a nice photo opportunity with Ptarmigan made up for it. A good day 🙂 Tish, Natacha, John, Alistair, Bob, FionaC, FionaD, Corinne, Jake, Rob – set out with intentions to walk low level…

Maps: 33 Est. time of arrival: 09:15 Bus stop: Bridge at NH016040 Est. time of departure: 17:30 Leave Elgin: 07:00 Another popular area, and justifiably so, Loch Quoich has three Munros on its North side and one to its South. Gleouraich, with its good access path, can be combined with Spidean Mialach to give a fine day’s walking, while further west Sgurr a’Mhaoraich is normally climbed on its own. It also has a good path leading up into Coire nan Eiricheallach. To the south of Loch Quoich is the Munro Gairich, which can be climbed…

July 2013 Car Meet: Grey Corries
On a perfect day for walking, it was surprising that only 3 stalwarts set off for the Grey Corries: David BD, Fiona C and Malcolm C. Could it be that the Ashes Cricket, the final day of the Tour de France and the Open Golf at Muirfield had conspired to transform most MMC Club members into couch potatoes for the day? Wisely, the group left Inverness just after 0700 and by 0920 they were walking up the track to the bothy at the base of Stob Ban, aiming to bag the 4 Munros on the ridge. All day, there was not a cloud in the sky, unlimited visibility, dry ground…
July 2013 Weekend Meet Report: Blackwater, Glen Shee
Glenshee is a wonderful location with a multitude of options in the surrounding hills so it was surprising that only five members attended. Andy, Ella, Evelyne, Drummond and Dan selected their own rooms in the spacious and well-equipped Blackwater Bunkhouse, cracked open a bottle and discussed plans. Saturday was hot and sunny. Ella and Drummond went up Ben Tirran via a new bulldozed track and then continued around the head of Lochs Wharral and Brandy over various high points. Drummond hoped that some of these would be Marilyns, Grahams, Humps…, etc. but Oracle Andy confirmed that they were “merely” Corbett tops. I’m not sure which “high points” Drummond had in…
