Isle of Lewis (Uig Bay) Weekend Meet 28th April – 3rd May 2022

A fantastic time was had by the 10 lucky people who ventured to this beautiful and wild part of Lewis. Everyone was there for the 3 nights of Friday to Sunday but others took the opportunity of arriving on Thursday and some stayed until Tuesday. This is of course is easy for those who don’t have to earn a crust! It also makes sense in view of the high cost of taking a car on the ferry. The Otter Bunkhouse and Bothy are very comfortable although they could be improved by additional fridge space and an oven. The selling point is the position on the sea front. Unfortunately it did…

New Members Meet, Sunday 8th May 2022 – Update with walks

More details on the planned walk for the day: Some of the club’s experienced members will lead a walk into the hills behind Kingussie. In good weather Càrn an Fhreiceadain is a relatively easy ascent over moorland following a good stony track almost to the top. To gain the summit and return down the far side is a walk of 18 kilometers, rising nearly 700m and will take around 5 hours if you are reasonably fit. At the top in good weather there are some fabulous views over the wild Monadhliath mountains, across to the Cairngorms and Strathspey. The Scottish hills in May can be lovely and warm but it…

Weekend Meet – Smiddy, Dundonnell – 1-3 April 2022

A return by the club after a number of years saw 9 hardy souls arrive at the Smiddy hut. I have to say that the hut is much more inviting than I remember. Once the fire is lit the ambience of the hut completely changes. Dan commented that he arrived to a roaring fire, so much coal that the burning lumps kept falling out of the grate onto the brick floor. Next was a crampon fixing session.  A good hour was spent trying various combinations of boots and crampons. Much advice was shouted simultaneously from the four corners of the hut. This ended with a discussion on the merits of…

The Living Mountain, Nan Shepherd

(Outdoor) Book Club, The Living Mountain, Nan Shepherd. 25th June.

Gwen Moffat certainly left an impression on us all and for the second book club of the year, Gwen has inspired us to get outside. Our next book club will be on the 25th of June and it’s going to be outside, in the Cairngorms! At the height of summer, we’ll pick a walk to a picturesque spot on the Cairngorm Plateau where we can set up for an evening with Nan Shepherd.
