An update on upcoming bus meets!

It was agreed at the AGM to re-introduce Bus meets into the club calendar and Brent has kindly offered to take over planning these for the next while! We are planning meets for every month April to October and welcome suggestions etc. We try to be as flexible as possible with drop offs and pickups but remember our schedule is dependent upon the bus drivers permissible hours and the roads we can travel. For most meets we start in Elgin at 7am and return for 9pm, calling at Forres, Nairn and Inverness where we have been notified someone is waiting!

We are trying to be as inclusive as possible and go to locations that allow, climbing, scrambling, traverses, and horseshoe routes. We obviously cannot guarantee the weather but can look to change a destination where it is advisable.

As before I invite you to be adventurous, roll out your waterproofs, get your lightweight gear out or think about something other than the big hills. You can plan ahead or join with others making plans on the bus, perhaps walking with somebody new. At £15 it’s a great day out and the social aspect usually includes a quick stop at a local hostelry. All we ask is that you make a decision and commit to coming.

The next bus meet will be to Glen Carron on Sunday the 16th July. Final destination will be slightly dependent upon peoples plans but is likely to be Coulags. This perhaps one of the better journeys with a myriad of possibilities for whatever tickles your fancy.

Some ideas include:

Climbing or scrambling on Fuar Tholl

A low-level traverse from

  • Achnashellach to Coulags (18k, 800m ascent).
  • Or around Maol Chean Dearg (19K, 750m ascent)
  • For the fitter amongst us you could add in Beinn Liath Mhor or Sgorr Ruadh.

From Achnashellach

  • Beinn Liath Mhor (Munro), Sgorr Ruadh (Munro), Fuar Tholl (Corbett)

From Coulags

  • Maol Chean Dearg (Munro), Corbett An Ruadh Stac (Corbett).

From Craig

  • Sgurr na Feartaig or Beinn Tharsuinn (Corbetts) both if you can do it in the time
  • Sgurr na Ceannaichen (Corbett)

From Loch Sgamhain or nearby

  • Moruisg (Munro) and\or Sgurr na Ceannaichen (Corbett)

From Achnasheen

  • Fionn Bheinn (Munro)

There are countless other paths and less trodden tops along the way that are worth a visit in this fabulous part of the country. Why not get off the bus just after Ledgowan, head off to Scardoy lodge and then up onto the fine ridge that gives great views into the hills north of Loch Monar (Maoile Lundaidh etc.). Its hard going underfoot but a beautiful ridge – how far can you get? Remember you have to get back to the road and there is a railway line in the way!

Please remember though that it is your responsibility to ensure you are kitted out with the correct clothing and gear, that you have the requisite skills to get from your start point to the end point in time to meet the bus. If you are not sure about what to take or where to go and\or are new to the club just ask.

With a bus meet you can get off the bus and back on at the arranged time at any point along the agreed route. Just make it up on the bus – be adventurous!
