August 2013 Bus Meet Report: Cairngorm Traverse

Dan and Joe – after much indecision, we found ourselves at Derry Lodge taking the right fork. The first summit (Beinn Bhreac) was soon reached. We made full use of the shelter provided by the cairn, whilst others were forced to face the wind. A pleasant walk across some bog took us to Beinn a Chaorainn. Then on to Fords of Avon where there was a nice new howff. The slopes of Cairngorm were a slog, but a nice photo opportunity with Ptarmigan made up for it. A good day 🙂 Tish, Natacha, John, Alistair, Bob, FionaC, FionaD, Corinne, Jake, Rob – set out with intentions to walk low level…

September 2013 Bus Meet: Loch Quoich (inc. Navigation Skills)

View from Sgurr a’Mhaoraich (taken on Oct 2012 Bus Meet) Sunday 15th September 2013 O.S. Maps: 33 Est. time of arrival: 09:15 Bus stop: Bridge at NH016040 Est. time of departure: 17:30 Leave Elgin: 07:00 Another popular area, and justifiably so, Loch Quoich has three Munros on its North side and one to its South. Gleouraich, with its good access path, can be combined with Spidean Mialach to give a fine day’s walking, while further west Sgurr a’Mhaoraich is normally climbed on its own. It also has a good path leading up into Coire nan Eiricheallach. To the south of Loch Quoich is the Munro Gairich, which can be climbed…

July 2013 Car Meet: Grey Corries

On a perfect day for walking, it was surprising that only 3 stalwarts set off for the Grey Corries: David BD, Fiona C and Malcolm C. Could it be that the Ashes Cricket, the final day of the Tour de France and the Open Golf at Muirfield had conspired to transform most MMC Club members into couch potatoes for the day? Wisely, the group left Inverness just after 0700 and by 0920 they were walking up the track to the bothy at the base of Stob Ban, aiming to bag the 4 Munros on the ridge. All day, there was not a cloud in the sky, unlimited visibility, dry ground…

The classic traverse is back! There is something for everyone here: Munros, climbing opportunities or a low level walk through the Lairig Ghru or the Lairig an Laoigh. There are more Munros than you can shake a walking pole at – Derry Cairngorm, Ben Macdui,…

June 2013 Bus Meet Report: Loch a’Bhraoin to Kinlochewe

Dan and Graeme M (+ Graeme B until Munro 2) turned left to leave the crowds. Went up the ridge to Sgurr Breac and then backtracked onto A’Chailleach. At this point, Graeme B decided he could not hack the pace and went his own way! Dan and GM followed the steepest dry-stane wall down to some peat bog. After another circa 10 miles of bog we found ourselves at the top of Beinn a’Mhuinidh. After a short while we headed downhill towards Kinlochewe. Dan suggested going down a rocky stream (what could possible go wrong?) but Graeme M sensibly suggested the grassy slope. After 18 miles, we we’re glad of…

May 2013 Car Meet Report: Glen Feshie

Well, the craic was poor on Friday morning when I discovered that there were only 10 names for the bus! However, undeterred, a small (but very select!) band of intrepid mountaineers ventured into Feshie, complete with 3 cars which allowed us to complete a wee traverse from Achlean. George Herraghty and Rob Murray met Ray Harron, Corinne Ferguson and Tom Summerscales in Forres where we were joined by prospective new member (if we haven’t scared her off!) Alex Davies. There was then a journey to Aviemore where an Anglo-French connection was rekindled as Natacha joined the merry band. Morale was not high as the mist was low and weather was…

March 2013 Bus Meet: Blair Atholl

Twelve members and guests boarded the bus and headed South down the A9. Bill and Graham were first off the bus at the Trinafour turning. They successfully ascended the Corbett An Dun. Kat, Fiona, Jenny and David headed up Glen Tilt towards Carn a’Chlamain. Kat and Fiona continued farther than intended (Plan A was to leave plenty of time for the teashop), but wisely turned back before the snow got too deep. Jenny and David continued manfully onwards and upwards and finally arrived at a spot that was declared the summit. Jerry, Malcolm, Fiona, Bob and Sheena went up Glen Tilt past Gilbert’s Bridge (so they claim…more later). As they ascended…
