Sunday, 20th September 2009 O.S.Map(s): 25/33/34 Est. time of arrival: 9.30 Time of departure: 18.00 Leave Elgin: 7.00 The last time we did this traverse in October 2006, we had the most superb weather imaginable, so here’s hoping for a repeat! Another great location with opportunities for a traverse which can include Munros, Corbetts or low level walking. I am not sure about the fishing possibilities but I will leave that for those in the know to find out! The bus will drive up Glen Affric and along Loch Beinn a’ Mheadhoin to the car park at the bridge (216243) it will then make its way round to Morvich in…
August 2009 Bus Meet: Assynt
Sunday, 23rd August 2009 O.S.Map(s): 15 Est. time of arrival: 9.45 am Time of departure: 17.30 pm Leave Elgin: 7.00 am Assynt has an impressive array of outstanding mountains: Ben More Assynt, Conival, Canisp, Quinag, Breabag – names to conjure with. The rock in this area is predominantly gneiss, on top of which sandstone hills have weathered to create some of the weird and magnificent shapes typical of this region and on a clear day, this is an area where you like to linger as long as possible. In addition to the excellent hillwalking in this area, there is some good scrambling on Quinag (Sail Gharbh, East Buttress – Grade…
July 2009 Car Meet Report: Seana Bhraigh
Sunday, 19 July 2009 Due to the expected low turnout for this meet, private cars were used instead of the bus, and with a favourable forecast, 11 members and guests and 2 dogs set off to tackle Seana Bhraigh, which lies in isolated splendour in the midst of a watery wilderness. From the new car park at Inverlael, the group set off up through the forest and followed the well worn path, over some tricky river crossings to the rim of the impressive Cadha Dearg (Red Pass). This is eagle country, but none were spotted as the now elongated group made their way up the final stony slopes to the…
June 2009 Bus Meet Report: Dundonnell
15 June 2009 The Dundonnel meet turned out to be another successful trip with an attendance of 35 members and guests despite a poor weather forecast. The weather was much better than expected and a great day was had by all. Ray Harron and Natacha Mihajlovic set off from Ardessie Waterfalls and walked up the track along the Allt Airdeasaidh. Within 1hr30, they got to the top of Sail Mhor where they enjoyed great views of the Summer Isles in the north and corbetts Beinn Dearg Mhor and Beinn Dearg Bheag in the south. After a leisurely snack, they followed the ridge of the corbett over Ruigh Mheallain and Sgurr…
July 2009 Meet: Seana Bhraigh (private cars only)
Sunday, 19th July 2009 O.S.Map(s): 20 Est. time of arrival: 9.30 am Time of departure: 18.00 pm Leave Elgin: 7.00 am As was the case last year, for the July meet we will be using private cars for transport instead of the bus. We will meet up at Lossie Green carpark in Elgin as usual at 7.00 am to see how many cars will be needed and share costs as necessary. We can then pick up at Forres, Nairn and Inverness as usual. This is a great opportunity to bag Seana Bhraigh, one of the most remote Munros. The minor second peak of Seana Bhraigh (906m) is at the NW…
May 2009 Bus Meet Report: Glenshee-Loch Muick Traverse
Sunday, 17 May 2009 We did not get the lovely Mediterranean spring weather enjoyed by all on our last bus meet however it remained clear and dry for most of the day. A rather fresh wind kept most parties moving swiftly on the plateau. The eastern traverse did not involve any difficulties for members and guests (28 in total, including 6 guests) and a very sociable and relaxed day was had by all. First off the bus at Crathie, Alan McConachie, Dave McLean, Annette Turnidge and Sam Coates set off for Gelder Shiel bothy for a pit stop and went back to the bus at Loch Muick bagging corbett Conachraig…
June 2009 Bus Meet: Dundonnell
Sunday, 21st June 2009 O.S.Map(s): 19/20 Est. time of arrival: 9.35 am Time of departure: 18.00 pm Leave Elgin: 7.00 am Another deservedly popular venue in the Northwest Highlands. The big objective here is An Teallach, comprised of two Munros, Bidean a’ Ghlas Thuill and Sgurr Fiona. There are several routes of ascent: One directly from Dundonnell and another from Corrie Hallie up to Ghlas Thuill are straightforward; a longer route from Corrie Hallie via Sail Liath offers enjoyable but exposed scrambling. Worthwhile alternatives to An Teallach in the Dundonell area are Sail Mhor, or a low(ish) level walk into Shenaval bothy and back. Of course various hills in the…
April 2009 Bus Meet Report: Torridon
Sunday, 19th April 2009 When bookings for this meet started coming in three weeks ahead of time, one might have guessed that this would turn out to be a fairly popular event. No less than forty-six members and guests (unseen in years if not decades) turned up on the day to enjoy the beauty of Torridon in superb weather conditions. David Brown-Douglas, George Herraghty and Ros Wright were first off the bus at Kinlochewe. They pressed on hard all day to get to the top of Slioch (someone must have moved the hill five miles up the glen since I was here last! said George) however, all three enjoyed a…
May 2009 Bus Meet: Glenshee-Loch Muick Traverse
Sunday, 17th May 2009 O.S.Map(s): 43/44 Est. time of arrival: 9.45 am Time of departure: 18.00 pm Leave Elgin: 7.00 am NB: The bus will pick up in Elgin (7.00), Forres (7.30), Grantown (8.00) and Tomintoul (8.30) only. Members from Inverness wishing to attend this meet should join the bus at one of the above points. This is a classic traverse that takes you from Auchallater (about 3km south of Braemar on the Glenshee road) following the course of the Callater Burn and Glen Callater, before emerging on the track to Carn an Sagart Mor (9 km). From here, you can either bear south around Loch Muick, or take the…
March 2009 Bus Meet Report: Kintail
Sunday, 15th March 2009 Kintail undoubtedly remains one of our favourite venues and did achieve a better attendance than last month: 25 members turned up despite a bad weather forecast, which was unfortunately accurate enough. Surprisingly, visibility was fairly good between heavy showers, but the wind kept getting stronger throughout the day. Alan Duncan, Ella Grant and Val Kemp enjoyed a fairly good day until they got to the top of A’Chralaig. As they dropped down, Ella slipped on the wet grass and believed then that her wrist was broken. They bravely soldiered on, taking their time on the way down and got safely back to the Cluanie Inn. Moira…
