January 2009 Indoor Meet: New Twists for Old Hills

Thursday, 22nd January, 8.00-10.00 pm, Glen Moray Distillery, Bruceland Rd, Elgin Avid readers of Scottish Mountaineer will have noticed the excellent articles by David Jarman about alternative routes up familiar hills and seeing a completely different perspective. Forget the guide books, discard the usual well trodden routes, the camel line of hill bashers and get that adrenalin fix without any extra mileage. David will provide an insight into new routes for Ledi, Fhada, Ghlo, Mullach and other out of the way routes. You can get an idea of the theme by looking at issues 36, 37, 39 and 40 of Scottish Mountaineer, but better still, come along for the real…

December 2008 Bus Meet report: Monadhliath

21 December 2008 In stark contrast to the beautiful weather of the 2007 Xmas Meet, conditions for the 2008 version were awful, with rain and strong winds and it was difficult for any of the groups to do anything other than low level walking. There were 33 people on the Bus for this Meet and 9 others made their way to the Cairngorm Hotel, in Aviemore, for the early evening meal.  Numbers were therefore significantly down on all other years in recent memory, however the meal and the service at the Hotel were excellent and because of this the Hotel has been provisionally booked for the Club Xmas meal in…

Christmas Bus Meet and Dinner

Bus Meet: Monadhliath Sunday, 21st December 2008 O.S.Map(s): 35 Est. time of arrival: 9.00 am Time of departure: 16.00 pm Leave Elgin: 7.00 am This year’s December bus meet is to the Monadhliath hills. This meets the requirement of being close to the Christmas dinner venue in Aviemore, as well as offering a good day’s hillwalking if desired. The bus will go as far as Newtonmore, but there are numerous options to get off earlier to tackle the various hills around Aviemore, Kingussie and Newtonmore. For Munro baggers, the best option is the duo of A’Chailleach (Monadh Liath) and  Carn Sgulain. Usual access is from Glen Banchor on the south…

When Hell Freezes Over: Andy Kirkpatrick in Elgin

Friday 10th October 2008 8.00 pm Glen Moray Distillery Visitors Centre, Bruceland Rd, Elgin £5.00 Andy Kirkpatrick is one of Britain’s most talented mountaineers. He is also very very funny, with a humour to match the best standup comedy acts. Andy is touring the country with this talk just now and we are very lucky to have secured an opportunity to see him in Elgin! “When Hell Freezes Over” is a highly amusing account of his various expeditions to Patagonia, a treacherous mountain range at the southern most portion of South America, referred to amongst locals as “the eater of men”.  No trip to Patagonia is without incident, and Andy’s…

Sept 2008 Indoor Meet: MMC trip to Ecrins Massif

Thursday, 25 September 2008, 8.00 pm Glen Moray Distillery Visitors Centre, Bruceland Rd, Elgin The first indoor meet of the season is a slideshow presentation on the MMC trip to the Ecrins massif in the Southern Alps, which six members led by Illona Morrice undertook at the end of July – beginning of August. Basing themselves in the charming village of Ailefroide, the team tackled the many opportunities the area has to offer: From single and multipitch sport climbing to Alpine routes and glacier mountaineering. Thrill to the daring Alpine exploits of Joe Glennie and Ryan Slater on the Pelvoux traverse! Tremble as Ali Erginsoy and John Orr brave crevasses…

Indoor Meets Syllabus published

The new syllabus for the 2008-2009 season is out and can be viewed here. All events will be held at the Glen Moray Distillery Visitors Centre unless otherwise stated. The highlight of this season will undoubtedly be Andy Kirkpatrick’s talk on 10 October entitled “When Hell Freezes Over”, a very funny account of his various expeditions to Patagonia, a treacherous mountain range at the southern most portion of South America, referred to amongst locals as “the eater of men”. No trip to Patagonia is without incident, and Andy’s tales of being trapped on mile high summits in hurricane winds, buried by avalanches, or pushed close to hypothermia whilst lashed to…
