A scramble on Mullach nan Coinean

December weekend meet, Glenfinnan

10 members attended the weekend meet at Glenfinnan Bunkhouse and were joined by Justin for the social activities on Saturday night. Friday 5th December Tim climbed Glas Bheinn Mhor from Alltsigh (Loch Ness). It was a pleasant walk up a small hill, initially with clear but grey views to the south. A bit of navigation practice near the top was followed by an increasingly dark descent with weather coming in from the south. Alistair climbed Stob Coire a Chearcaill from Loch Eil. Saturday 6th December The day started with a tripped kettle socket in the kitchen which delayed morning drinks and flask filling. Tim, Alistair, Annika and Rob climbed the…

Ullapool SYHA weekend meet

Friday On Friday, Evelyn stopped on her way to Ullapool at Silverbridge for a nice short walk along the Black Water River to Little Garve Bridge. It was a mild and sunny autumn day and the colours on the trees were beautiful. Annika, Rob and Babs headed up Beinn Enaiglair. They started from Lochdrum having planned to walk to Meall Doire Faid via the stalkers path. It was extremely boggy so on arriving at the bealach they decided to stay on higher ground and climbed the Corbett instead (so much for Babs’ Graham ambitions – even though she keeps denying them). They returned on the same route and had a…

October weekend meet, Pitlochy Youth Hostel

3rd Oct Annika and Rob Acheson – An early start to get through Drumochter Pass before storm Amy arrived. At Blair Atholl decided to walk the Glen Tilt circuit. A dry misty autumnal start with noticeably high levels of water in streams and the river, wet underfoot we reached the viewpoint for lunch before the weather descended with worsening wind and rain, a flooded stream prevented us reaching the bridge so we retraced our steps and crossed to the other side lower down. Finished very wet and needed to try and keep warm until the youth hostel opened at Pitlochry. Tim Spencer and Alistair Jeffs – We set off for Ben Mholach…

September Weekend Meet, Glen Brittle, Skye.

Fifteen MMCer’s travelled to Glen Brittle for the annual meet in what is arguably one of the best situated and well appointed huts in the whole of our splendid country. After negotiating the ‘bank holiday’ traffic along the road (although it was not actually a bank holiday at all, more the torrent of tourists trying to get to and from the infamous Fairy Pools) and dodging the pot holes – one of which looked more like a sink hole, the mountaineers arrived over Friday evening at the hut. Plans were hatched and shared on the Friday night ranging from gentle strolls, epic ridge traverses, coffee shop expeditions and various other…

Kinlochleven August weekend meet, Waters Cottage FRCC.

The first weekend in August saw MMCers descend on Kinlochleven to stay at the hut of the Fell & Rock Climbing Club of the English Lake District. En route on Friday, Evelyn and Debbie ascended Meall Fuar-mhonaidh, a Graham of character that is prominent above Loch Ness. The approach from the northeast went through birch woodland, and then amidst the heather in full bloom, on what was recorded in the Big Red Book as a beautiful day with scattered showers. Meanwhile Tim left his trusty Deux Chevaux between Loch Tarff and Fort Augustus and ascended the Corbett of Càrn a’ Chuilinn to the accompaniment of the shrill sound of skylarks,…
