Upcoming Weekend Meets

Hi All, Hope that you doing well and that you are all are getting out and about in the outdoors. This is a update of the weekend trips as a few more weekend trips have been booked since the last update a couple of months back – 2024 is now looking to be a great year for the weekend meets – with a lot of variety. Due to the success of the trip to North Wales last month, I am looking into a possibly of a similar trip in 2024 to the Lake District, there will be more information on this on the next update. In the next few months,…

CIC Meet Report 4th-6th Aug 2023

Another month, and another memorable MMC weekend meet. Whilst you might think from the UK’s highest mountaineering hut, great mountaineering feats would be achieved, of course the CIC lived up to it’s usual rainy reputation. Fortunately, with the rest of the UK battling yellow weather warnings, Ben Nevis was surprisingly unscathed. Still, wet rock meant sensible route choices were made this weekend. With warnings on parking in force due to the mountain biking event at Fort William, Olly and David arrived early on the Friday and headed up to the CIC on the Friday arriving just after 6pm. Unfortunately, there was no toilet roll so a cry for help was…

Weekend Meet Report – Cairndow, April 2023

A fine weekend was had as always with the Moray Mountaineering Club at the Cairndow Village Hall. What a cracking location to explore, a place where the club haven’t been for years! However it had been noted by a few members on this meet that more and more meets were taking place closer to the central belt. This certainly is just a coincidence, nothing to do with a certain weekends meet organiser living just one hour away from this venue. Given the distance for some members, Alan and Fiona decided to head down early on Thursday to climb one of the new ‘Grahams’ – Cruach Neuran. Nothing positive was said…

MMC North Wales Meet – Ty Gwyn, near Llanberis, 20-25 September 2023

Classic walks, scrambles and climbs galore. Where better to spend 5 days than in a hut in Snowdonia? Relatively basic but well appointed bunkhouse. For just £10pppn. Lift shares are certainly encouraged. If you’re interested please let David Treagus the meet organiser know to get you on the list. Only 12 spaces so first come first served!  Photo by Neil Mark Thomas on Unsplash

Crianlarich Weekend Meet Report, February 2023

Another month another wet and windy meet hosted by Travel with Treagus! Hardy mountaineers decided to embrace the thoroughly miserable forecast and decended on Inverardran Hut in Crianlarich. On the Friday, Justin and Eric managed to get out and climb Beinn Dearg in Glen Lyon. A very wise plan getting out on the Friday, as the weather was much better than forecast, a rather overcast and mild day. On the Saturday, Fiona, Eric and Damian decided given the poor weather, an excellent choice of day out would be to walk to the Drovers in and back for lunch. They had a wonderful day, and didn’t get too soaked either! Babs was…

Weekend Meet, Ballater, Hogmanay 2023

Ballater was the venue for the 2022/3 Hogmanay festivities and it certainly delivered. Not everyone could arrive on the Friday, due to other commitments, but those that could were able to make the most of the day. Evelyne decided to enjoy the 7 Bridges of Ballater walk. A lovely walk through woods, fields, the old railway line and along the River Dee. Little did she know that she would be repeating this two days later in very different weather!  Blue sky on Hogmanay enticed many out onto the hills, with Brent, Dianne, Dottie and Justin having a great day on Morrone from Braemar. The path was icy to 650m, and…

Weekend Meet, Elphin.  1st and 2nd October 2022

It’s been a while since the MMC visited the Grampian Speleological Group’s hut in Elphin.  It’s a well-equipped venue that offers a fine view over Cul Mor and Suilven from the conservatory, a proper fire for when it gets dark and cold, and a good drying room.  The weather on Saturday was not ideal, but nonetheless plans were made and the parties scattered. Fiona and Bob completed a traverse from Lochinver to Elphin.  Bob’s account reads “We got a lift round to Lochinver from Evelyne and after a visit to the pie shop we set off to walk to Elphin.  The first 3km was along a tarred road to Glencanisp…

Glenbrittle Weekend Meet, September 2022

The yearly Glenbrittle meet in Skye did not disappoint. Despite the promise of high winds, intrepid mountaineers managed to mountaineer! Both old and new members all had a fantastic time with highs on the Cuillin ridge (Jule and Lauren saying it was their best day on the hills, ever!), serenity being found at Coire Lagan and people ready to burst after eating enough food to feed a moderate sized army. Adventures were had on the Friday for some lucky part timers. Unfortunately, none of these adventures were immortalised in the Big Red Book. Having said this, Babs was spotted near Applecross Corbett bagging on Beinn Bhan. Jule was seen half…
