New Year 2014 Meet Report: Plockton

The year AD2014 arrived in Plockton with … well, it would appear not much … until a couple of minutes later when some slightly dodgy looking pyrotechnics sparked up the bonfire on the wee island by the village. Plockton bonfire sparked up by dodgy looking pyrotechnics Don’t worry folks, the MMC pyrotechnic (pyromaniac?) duo responsible for famous shows such as St Andrews Day, Inverey 2013 and Guy Fawkes Night, Inchnadamph 2012 had nothing to do with this show so the assembled crowd had a slightly greater chance of survival. Ray and Heavy at Plockton Harbour, awaiting the fireworks Celebrating the New Year The firework display that followed was a truly…

December 2013 Weekend Meet Report: Inverey

With the proximity of the Northern Cairngorms to Moray and the ski road to whisk the walker and climber to a high starting altitude it can be tempting to return time and again to the northern approaches of this magnificent high plateau. However, it is always worth the long drive round to the southern side to experience a different perspective, especially if there is quality accommodation on offer for the weekend. The Moray Mountaineering Club successfully filled the Cairngorm Club’s hut, Muir Cottage, at Inverey. A fine hut it is, recently extended and luxurious and well placed for access to the Cairngorms and also to hills to the south of…

November 2013 Weekend Meet Report: Inchnadamph

November at Inchnadamph Lodge has become an annual tradition for the Moray Mountaineering Club. Assynt is indeed one of the world’s loveliest areas and there is a lifetime’s worth of things to be done, whether walking, climbing, caving, kayaking, canoeing, cycling, fishing, geologising or whatever else takes your fancy. Uamh an Tartair visited en-route to Meall Coire an Lochain on the Friday: Everyone arrived safely at the salubrious accommodation despite a surreal small patch of extremely heavy hail that made a bit of the drive from Ullapool to Inchnadamph a bit more interesting than it should have been. The stove was lit and a sociable drink or two was drunk.…

September 2013 Weekend Meet Report: Glen Brittle

The Cuillin has been called a Mecca for Mountaineers, and in some ways they have their similarities. Every mountaineer, at least every British mountaineer, really must strive to visit the Cuillin at least once in their lifetime, and sometimes the queues at the bottom of the In Pin can resemble those surging around the Kaaba at the time of Hajj. Visitors to Mecca often do so as an annual pilgrimage and so it is for the Moray Mountaineering Club and Glen Brittle. In both cases the origins go back to ancient traditions, and in the case of the MMC it is the traditional Elgin September holiday. This year it fell…
