Weekend Meet: Rum, 3 – 6 May 2019

This is the long weekend and Rum is always a popular destination. We will be camping (Kinloch Village Campsite), £6 p pn, but there are eight places available in the camping pods, approx £40 for the weekend. Pods are first come first served and I will cancel the reservation if there are not enough takers a couple of weeks before the meet. If you have not been there before Rum offers excellent walking, with several Corbetts and lesser hills, superb rock climbing and it’s great for wildlife too. Climbing on Rum can be affected by breeding birds, so have a look at Mountaineering Scotland’s bird breeding information before you finalise plans Getting there…

Weekend Meet: Ariundle – Strontian. 5th- 7th April

This meet is based at the Ariundle Centre Bunkhouse in Strontian (Google Maps). OS Landranger sheet 40. This offers the Ardnamurchan peninsula, rock climbing on Garbh Bheinn and numerous Corbetts in a remote part of the country that we do not visit very often. It is also well located for kayaking on Loch Sunart, Loch Shiel and Kentra Bay and Loch Moidart. In addition there is a lot of local history and natural history and also plenty of opportunities for mountain biking. The bunkhouse is very comfortable and has a restaurant next door for those not wishing to cook. Price to be confirmed but probably £40 for the weekend. There…

Weekend Meet: Newtonmore, 1-3 February 2019

The next meet is to the western Cairngorms/Monadliath area staying at the Strathspey Hostel in Newtonmore. http://www.strathspeymountainhostel.com/ This is for the weekend of 1st-3rd February. This venue is ideal for walking with a good range of hills nearby and also for ski-touring if the snow comes. In view of low numbers for recent meets I have only reserved 10 bunks but the hostel sleeps up to 18. Bookings to me as soon as possible please. Prices in the order of £40 for the weekend but possibly less if we can fill the hut. Some options for private rooms too. The following meet is to the Loch Ossian Youth Hostel at…

Hogmanay Meet 30th December -2nd January 2019 (three nights)

The New Year meet this year is based at the Kintail Outdoor Centre, owned, by the National Trust at Inverinate in Kintail. This is a comfortable, spacious and well equipped bunkhouse and we have stayed there before for several New Year meets. It is conveniently located for many Munros and also offers a choice of low level walks, cycle routes and wet weather alternatives, including the Falls of Glomach. We have booked 15 places for the meet and there are still a few not yet taken. For this meet we require a £40 deposit. Cost for the meet to be confirmed as the Club traditionally subsidises the cost but it…

Inchnadamph Meet Report

Inchnadamph Meet Report, November 2018 David Treagus and Alistair Jeffs (Mr I.M.L.) left their respective homes on Thursday and spent the night at the bunkhouse near Inverlael to get an early start on “Beinn Dearg and the other three”. (Editor’s note – presumably these are Cona Meall, Meall nan Ceapraichan and Eididh nan Clach Geala). Fresh snow lay on the ground and David wisely decided to let Mr Trainee International Mountain Leader break trail through the snow all day. They enjoyed a good, but long and arduous, day out, which was clear most of the day and were well satisfied to get four hills in before the arrival of…

Inchnadamph 2-4 November

The next meet is to the ever popular Inchnadamph Lodge, probably the largest and most comfortable of the venues each year. The Lodge has been refurbished so we are back after an absence of two years. For those who haven’t been there before there is a great range of activities. The Assynt hills are well known but there is also kayaking and climbing available near by and most years see some caving activity too. This weekend also has a slight reputation for the annual Halloween fancy dress party. This year’s theme is Masquerade so you can embarrass yourself as much as you like and no-one need know who you are.…

Durness Weekend, 3 – 5th August

The August meet is based at the Lazy Crofter Bunkhouse at Durness on the north coast. Details of this very comfortable bunkhouse are on their website – http://www.visitdurness.com/bunkhouse/ This is handy for the magnificant Foinaven and Arkle, as well as Ben Hope, the most northerly Munro, and the lovely Ben Loyal. Another hill en route is the lonely Ben Klibreck. Cape Wrath is a spectacular site and there are even higher cliffs at the nearby Whiten Head which is rather less visited as there is no track to it. Smoo Cave is another local attraction. Kayaking is a possibility and there are also plenty of climbs in the area, on…

Applecross 1-3 June

The next meet is also a camping meet to Applecross. This is an excellent and well equipped campsite, close to the se and the pub. There is a good range of hills here and also some excellent climbing on the Torridonian sandstone in dramatic scenery. Possibly also opportunities for some sea kayaking. Although a bit out of the way it also gives access to the Strathcarron hills on the way home on Sunday. I have booked io pitches at the campsite which does get quite busy now that itis on the north coast 50 route. Names to me as soon as possible please. http://applecross.uk.com/campsite/ Pods are available for those who prefer…

Crianlarich Weekend 6-8th July 2018

The July meet is to the ever popular Ochils Mountaineering Club Inverardran hut just outside of Crianlarich. The hut was modernised a couple of years ago and is very comfortable, sleeping 18, with hot showers and a spacious lounge. It is well located for a wide range of the Perthshire hills and is also not too far from the Arrochar area which is renowned for its climbing. This meet is usually quite popular and has been over-subscribed in the past so please get your names in to me early. Cost to be confirmed; usually £25 for the weekend but it coud be less.  The hut is fully equipped. Access Just…
