Rock – Ice – Scrambling – Mountaineering – Bouldering
The club has a strong climbing/mountaineering scene. There are regular evening sessions throughout the year; indoors during the winter and outdoors during the summer. Members also undertake various other climbing adventures.
Summer
Every Tuesday evening through the summer, as long as daylight and weather permits, a group of enthusiasts meet to climb. As a full member join the MMC Climbers Whatsapp for discussions on weather, and get the latest information on destinations and any last minute changes. The usual venue are the sea-cliffs at Cummingston, where there are a fine variety of short routes on sandstone. Other destinations include Logie Head, Covesea, Huntly’s Cave and Redhythe Point. All venues offer routes with a range of difficulty (including some suitable for complete beginners) and are excellent training grounds for beginners and those with a nervous eye on Skye’s Inaccessible Pinnacle.
Winter
Every Tuesday, the club meets at the Aberlour climbing wall (within Speyside High School). Sessions for the climbing wall can we accessed through Moray Council’s Fit Life website. Club members meet at about 6pm-8:30pm.
Your responsibilities
You must be capable of belaying before attending a climbing meet. If you are beginner and a member please get in touch with the climbing coordinator, who can signpost you to potential training providers or inform you if there are any upcoming training days. Read the Club’s pages for information on your responsibilities and the participation statement. Many members have a wealth of experience that they are willing to share, but note that Club members do not provide “instruction”.
Equipment
The Club has a small selection of climbing equipment (including harness, helmet etc) that members and guests may borrow (Contact the climbing coordinator prior to the meet).
Climbing trips
Occasionally climbing trips are made to local centres such as the Ledge or Bloc10 on rainy weekends. When weather allows on sunny days/weekend meets trips are made to crags/climbs further afield (even abroad). There is a contingent of winter climbers who also partake when conditions allow on Scottish mixed winter climbs. These are all organised via the Climbing Whatsapp group. The club is an excellent way to meet climbing partners of all levels and there is an expectation that you have the skills to participate in these activities and do so at your own discretion.
Nesting Birds
Check Mountaineering Scotland’s latest news on nesting birds when planning your next outdoor climbing trip.
Climbing Coordinator
Emily Wallace is the Club’s Climbing Coordinator. Contact Emily for more information regarding the Club’s climbing activities.
