The Island of Arran is characterised by impressive mountains and lush glens, making it a haven for walkers and climbers. Goatfell (a Corbett at 874m) is the most famous and popular hill on the Island and three other splendid hills, Beinn Tarsuinn, Cir Mhor and Caisteal Abhail (all Corbetts) form part of the great granite ridge that lies west of Glen Rosa and Glen Sannox. The full traverse of these hills is 16km of challenging walking, including rock climbing and scrambling on the A’Chir ridge and the Witch’s Step. Alternatively, other routes are available avoiding all the ‘bad steps’.
The ferry from Ardrossan to Brodick takes only 55 minutes and the Island can also be reached from Claonaig in Kintyre to Lochranza. Mon-Sat sailings from Ardrossan are at 0700, 0945, 1230, 1515, 1800 and 2030 (Fri only). Mon-Sat return sailings from Brodick are at 0820, 1105, 1350, 1640 and 1920. 5 Day return fares are £59 for a car and £9.70 for passengers. Further details are available at www.calmac.co.uk/arran.
Corrie Village Hall is at Grid Ref NS 025 425, about 10km north of the Brodick ferry. Best to do your shopping on the mainland or in Brodick.
