Sat 4 – Sun 5 September 2010
We have been getting a good turn-out on most weekend meets recently, but the Skye meet broke all the records (as far as I can remember). On the Saturday night there were over thirty members and guests in the bar, plus a few others still in the campsite. I normally tryto mention everyone by name in the meet report, but in this case it is difficult, so apologies to anyone who is missed out.
What was it that led to the great turnout? Well, the Skye Cuillin are always going to be popular, but the main event was Bob MacDonald’s last Munro. On Saturday Bob and his followers made Bla Bheinn look like a lake district fell on a bank holiday weekend! Many different routes were ascended, including the classic Clach Glas – Bla Bheinn traverse (Bob, Ali, Andy B, Tom, Graeme H, Imke, Chris, Drummond, Angus, Mike, Jake), an E1 graded climb (Illona, Graeme J and Martin), the direct approach (Sheila, Joe, Carol, Andy, Alison and Louise) and of course the well known “tea room” approach (Fiona, Alan and Natacha).
Not everyone was on Bla Bheinn. Fiona, Chris, Dan and Richard did the awesome scramble up Pinnacle Ridge on Sgurr nan Gillean. Despite the rather strong wind they all made it to the summit. Plans to carry on to Am Basteir were curtailed because of the ominous dark clouds on the horizion. Colin Cowie went up Sgurr Mhadaidh and Sgurr Ghreadaich, after which he made a hasty retreat from the rather gusty wind.
Sunday turned out to be another nice day. Natacha, Mike, and Drummond went up Glamaig, which rises above the campsite and had a superb view of two sea eagles. Richard, Dan, Joe, Fiona, Carol and Illona walked in to the stunning Lock Coruisk.
Thanks to everyone who came and made it such a successful weekend. Well done Bob… Now for round 2.
