2012 marks the centenary of Scott’s heroic but ultimately tragic expedition to the South Pole. In 1924 dramatic footage of the earlier stages of the expedition was made into a celebrated silent film by Herbert Ponting. Last year this footage was remastered by the British Film Institute and set to a very moving new score specially composed by Simon Fisher Turner. ‘The Great White Silence’ portrays Antarctica in all its fearsome beauty and is a lasting tribute to the courage of those involved.
Cinema Nairn are pleased to have Gary Hunt from Findhorn giving a short talk after the film. Gary has been on two prolonged naval postings to Antarctica and will provide a fascinating insight into this hostile and amazing environment.
‘The Great White Silence’ (U – 108 mins) shows on Friday 23rd November at 7.30pm at Nairn Community and Arts Centre. Tickets £5 at the door and contributions to Moray Gig appreciated.
